What are we doing here?
Not HERE here but like here, at Subverse.
Well, books. It all starts and ends with books. My thought process started with (what else) definitions. Origins. Underlying meaning. Culture. Lineage. Generational trauma.
From:
(adj) Subversive – also subversionary – tending or intending to subvert or overthrow, destroy, or undermine an established or existing system, especially legally constituted government or a set of beliefs.
To:
(verb) Subvert – to pervert or corrupt by an undermining of morals, allegiance, or faith. Traitorous, treacherous, seditious, destructive.
And:
(suffix) Verse - denoting an area of activity or interest or a section distinguished by a particular characteristic (“universe”).
Combined:
(noun) Subverse (obsolete) - A Substack about literature and culture and the world of books. Stories that uplift and inspire because life is too short to be sad. Stories that haunt us and infect our lives because deep down, we know it’s all a scam. Stories just for entertainment. Stories to overthrow capitalism and take back our power [maybe a reach but…].
Join me in discussing the best and worst of humanity through our stories. Enter into the darkness, my friend!
Just kidding it’s not that desperate. But really if everything was sunshine and rainbows, you would be bored to tears - admit it! We go beyond Erin’s favorite part of the horror movie to the real story. But this isn’t depressing or some type of faux goth angst. My goal is to dig deeper into the subtext to find those things that make us human in literature and art.
The vibe is cozy and inviting, but also existential dread. Sounds fun, right!
