So sorry to hear about Peanut. We lost Lola two weeks ago and I’m still devastated about it. But congrats on your imminent wedding! That’s a lot all at once for sure but I hope it’s a fun and healing time. Sending sympathy and supportive vibes 💪🏼❤️🙏🏼
Condolences on your loss, Natalie; losing a pet is always hard. Luckily, all the good memories with them stay with us forever. I still miss the affection and friendship of my childhood golden retriever, Molly. Such a good pup! Hope you find some comfort soon.
I'm new here, and quite happy to have found your page! Looking forward to chiming in occasionally.
Welcome!! Chime in more than occasionally or I guess whatever you feel in your heart is best. Losing a pet is the worst - we had golden retrievers growing up too, they are unlike any other companion. I am sure Molly was beloved. Thanks for being here Scott!
Oh Natalie, I am so so sorry about Peanut. There is room for both. Feeling sad for your precious Peanut and feeling sorrow at the current human devastation. She wasn't just a cat. The loss of a furry child IS all consuming. The house feels different. There is a silence that can be deafening and it is like walking into a stranger's home. Death has a very defined energy no matter if it is animal or human.
I'm sending all my love.
I'm three episodes into The Fall Of The House Of Usher and I'm really enjoying it so far. Mike F. can be hit or miss for me. Did not like his series on Netflix last year but I LOVED his version of Stephen King's Doctor Sleep and it has become one of my favorite spooky movie adaptations.
I've had Time's 100 Best Mystery and Thriller Books Of All Time bookmarked for WEEKS, I just haven't had the time to dig in. Your summary was AWESOME. 💕
Doctor Sleep was so well done, agreed!!! The loss is everywhere isn’t it. I bought myself a weighted lavender scented cat plushie for our trip and I don’t even care if I look like a kid with that thing. Thank you for your kind words!!
Oh, dear Natalie. My kitty-loving heart aches for you and your fiancé. One of life’s biggest travesties is that our pets live such short lives. Peanut’s was way too short 😔.
<deep breath>
I’m vicariously excited for you re: impending nuptials! It goes so fast; savor the small breaths in between pictures, guests, canapés. We’ll see you when you’re back 💛
Condolences, but also congratulations! So cool to me that you mentioned The Shadow of the Wind. I loved that book—putting it on the re-read list. My initial post-college/working-world reading was detective. Chandler I love and went back a couple years ago and re-read almost all of them. My desert island books. Loved early James Elroy too—the Black Dahlia. Anyway, thank you for what do—it’s a great substack.
I am so very sorry for your loss, Natalie. It really is such deep pain.
On another note, Miracle Creek is absolutely amazing-- one of my favorite mysteries I read last year. Just picked up her sophomore novel Happiness Falls.
Thanks Lauren, it truly is. Everyone knows this pain, its the curse of loving animals I guess. And that bumps Miracle Creek up for me on the list of possible vacation books... this is getting way hard to choose 😁
Oh no, I'm so sorry :( I don't read a ton of thrillers/mysteries, but Sign Here by Claudia Lux is a fun thriller (lite) book that's perfect for Halloween reading! Also a huge Isabel Cañas fan — her books are the perfect blend of romance and spooky/thriller/horror! I hope you're able to find some peace in the pages of a book
I love lite Halloween thrillers, and Sign Here has been floating around so may be time to check it out! I have The Hacienda on my TBR for sure too! And thank you Kirby very much ❤️
I’m so sorry about Peanut Natalie - sending lots of hugs ❤️ and congrats ahead of next weekend! I hope you have such a wonderful time and a honeymoon full of (sun?) and a lot of love! Drive my plow I read earlier this year and loved it SO much I’d really really recommend. Interesting comments on Mexican Gothic - I’ve just received it as part of book club thing and I’m intrigued about it, I can’t say I’ve heard much good about it 😬 Goodreads is a bit scathing of it haha
Thank you Martha! There will definitely be sun involved and lots of reading time so you know I'm happy about that! Drive Your Plow is getting a lot of votes so I'm excited to read it. I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on Mexican Gothic - and I hope I didn't taint the experience for ya.
So sorry for your loss, Natalie!! There is something sweetly masochistic in our persistence at keeping pets. We enter into the bargain knowing that it will all end in heartbreak and then it does and then we do it all over again and again. Worth it every time.
I don’t read a ton of thrillers or mystery books BUT one that comes to mind is Lady Audrey’s Secret. It’s a 19th century novel, which I do read a lot of. Don’t mind me on my crusade to get everyone else reading them too. It’s like a Victorian Gone Girl with Rebecca vibes. I think you’d get a kick out of it!!
Congrats on the impending nuptials & enjoy the honeymoon :) can’t wait to hear about what you read while you’re away!
Thank you Eve. Sweetly masochistic is the best description for pets I’ve ever heard. We just always think we have more time. And Lady Audrey sounds RIGHT up my alley!!!
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was truly a great read for me and it felt so fun when I was working with Eli and the gang when it came to extreme popularity and we all read it and talking about it - those were fun days. The camaraderie we had around maybe 2 or 3 books a year there was so fun and something truly special :)
Detective Thrillers are at the top of my list and Killers of the Flower Moon is next on my list!! Great stuff my beautiful beautiful wife ❤️

I saw your post and I think that day or the next we lost Peanut. Such a sad experience. But thank you - also so much to celebrate 🖤

I appreciate your kind words. And you are so right about Elroy! I can't believe me and the Times left him out. And thank you for being here 😊

I promise no tainting! When a book isn’t so widely loved I sometimes find it more intriguing to read. This will be another one of those times.
*drive your plow 🤦♀️
Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk was one of the BEST books I have ever read!
Sending love to you for Peanut 💔
Ok two votes for Drive Your Plow its official its on the TBR!! and thank you Nicole ❤️

Lady Audley* it looks like we both meant (damn autocorrect)
Ahh yes--good catch! Lady Audley!!!
