I've also been "meaning" to read Girl, Woman, Other for agessss. My mom borrowed it and loved it. And yet I still haven't read it!! I think I'm a little intimidated?
400 sq feet?! Y'all in love IN LOVE. You bought all the books! I love it! That means more fire reviews from you 😍 I've been eyeing Cleopatra and Frankenstein. Def want/need to read RuPaul's memoir.
I can't name just one favorite lady author. Hélène Cixous, Anaïs Nin, Violette Leduc, Françoise Sagan, Laura Esquivel, Marguerite Duras, and more!
I have not seen Dune yet but I've heard great things from people with taste what I trust.
Still trudging along with Splinters by Leslie Jamison. Last week was brutally busy. I'm vowing to finish it this week.
We are learning MANY lessons of marriage right up front let me tell you!! I am sure we will look back on these days fondly when we have to clean two bathrooms instead of one each week. Fabulous lady authors, Duras is spectacular. SEE DUNE! ;)
I have a snobbish aversion to books that “everyone loves.” The few times I’ve caved and read some of these, I’ve been as disappointed as I expected to be, so I steer clear of them.
I do have Monsters on my TBR shelf and am eager to get to it. Really want to read RuPaul’s book too.
Currently reading North Woods and loving it. (Does “everyone” love this one? If so, I may be a liar).
Yet another great post, my friend. Love your new mobile desk!
I have not seen Dune, and own the book and have not read the book. I keep telling myself one day. (Along with Girl, Woman, Other/The Idiot/Milkman) I'm packing for a trip next week and realized all of the books I have set aside were written by women. Yay lady authors!
God favourite female writers… I’d say my go to queens are Toni Morrison, Sally Rooney, Yaa Gyasi and Claudia Piñeiro? I’ve just thought of that on the spot BUT those are women who I’ve read multiple books from and everyone has been sublime. Trust them with my life.
I’ve also been dying to read Outline by Cusk!!!! I’ve been saving it for the summer because well there’s a shell on the front need I say more…? I look forward to reading it semi at the same time and (hopefully) us both loving it. Heard such high praise. Love the Lispector - Near To The Wild Heart was the other of hers I was considering (after The Hour of the Star). Maybe I should just….buy both?
I’ve never seen dune. Frankly I’m terrified of the length. Do I watch it? Also the women’s prize list has me so stoked and I have FOUR of the listed books! Hangman, River East River West, Enter Ghost and Brotherless Night. Will report in good time how they all are but I’m excited.
I am very excited for you to tell me which women's prize book is worth the buy! Dune one is a bit slower but I honestly dont watch them for the action - its the immersive experience. I could not believe how fast the time went while watching - I say do it!
BUY BOTH :) I think we will both love the Cusk and the Lispector because good taste? Haha
All I’m seeing is buy both and I’m here for it. Your wish is my wish! I think we will both love Cusk and Lispector too! Bc we have great taste. Expecting great things from the pair of them x
Who is your favorite lady author?-- Impossible to choose. I've devoured everything that Emily St. John Mandel and Sally Rooney have written so far.
Have you seen Dune? If so tell me all your thoughts!! -- Not yet but rewatched the first movie this week in the hopes that I'll see part two soon.
What are you reading and is it any good? -- Currently reading The Atlas Complex by Olivie Blake and I think I've found my groove with it. I was honestly a bit confused by the characters for a while.
Ah I LOVE St John Mandel. I liked Normal People but it almost felt like one Rooney was enough - are her other titles just more of the same? I feel I need to give her another go.
See Part II its so worth the almost 3 hours (yikes)
I have seen Atlas around a lot but the first page threw me off the writing/narrative voice.
every time I read your newsletter I come out of it with more books added to my tbr it’s endless but I love it!!! I think my favorite woman author would have to be Shirley Jackson, but also love anything Carmen Maria Machado writes
Natalie - My favorite female author is Willa Cather. I recently did a profile on her life and work. I also love Emily St. John Mandel.
I haven't seen Dune yet. Loved the first movie, wanting to see the second.
I was reading Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel but I just couldn't get into it so I am setting it aside. Getting ready to start Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver.
I will have to check out your profile of Willa, I don't know much about her! I highly recommend Dune part II it was amazing. And can't wait to hear what you think about Demon its a whopper of a tale
Love this list and need to add a couple to my TBR. One piece of advice re Milkman - don't read it until you have the time to immerse yourself in it. The writing style is a bit challenging but once you do get into it, it flows, and it's such a powerful book!
I am on a woman author WINNING STREAK with 3 reads in a row, all of them with wonderful strangeness, strong language, suspense, emotional accuracy, memorable characters and atmosphere:
Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield (maybe you were the one who first mentioned this, Natalie?); moody, melancholic, incredible deep ocean images, grief
The Garden by Clare Beams (forthcoming April --literary light horror with a gothic feel and incredible language, about an infertility center in the 1940s and the lengths women will go to, hoping to keep their babies)
AND NOW
Hum by Helen Phillips (forthcoming July--very quick read, near future family trying to have a few nice days while dealing with ever-present tech addiction, ruined world vibes, but just so darn sharp and quietly funny that it doesn't read as depressing)--just got approved for this one on Netgalley if there are other NG users reading this
Our Wives Under the Sea was beautiful. I could feel the sadness throughout each page, and even though I saw the end coming, it really hurt when it did. It's one of the weirder books I've read with its strangely disturbing visuals and tender love story.
I've also been "meaning" to read Girl, Woman, Other for agessss. My mom borrowed it and loved it. And yet I still haven't read it!! I think I'm a little intimidated?
I know I am! Maybe we need to let go of that...

THE KITTIES LOOK LIKE FUR HEAVEN!!!!

Excited to hear your thoughts about Cronin's The Ferryman! I've had it on my TBR for a while too :)
it was a wild ride!!!
Now I REALLY need to move it up my TBR. If only it wasn't 500 books long... sigh.
I have a snobbish aversion to books that “everyone loves.” The few times I’ve caved and read some of these, I’ve been as disappointed as I expected to be, so I steer clear of them.

North Woods is a very under the radar "love" so I think you are safe!!
and thank you :)
PHEW
Fave women authors: for non-fiction, I’d go with Isabel Wilkerson. For fiction, Chimimanda Ngozi Adichie and Alice Walker.
ADDS TO TBR dangitt...... :)
feels good to get you back, not gonna lie 😜

I contemplated trying to read Dune for about 2.875 seconds and promptly gave up. Hooray for the ladies though!!
I keep telling myself I’ll read it. One day. Sometime, some day.

I really, really liked The Idiot but I think it's very much a love it or hate it book! You'll know very quickly whether or not it's for you.
I read the first chapter and then had to put it down for something else but I really really liked that first chapter so I have high hopes!

two EXCELLENT choices I knew I liked you 😃

I would recommend listening to it. As an audiobook it was so lyrical. I’m not sure if I would have had the patience to sit and read it.
This is wonderful advice! A little milkman hack

Well make it ten novels because I need to read Our WIves. What a streak!!
Haha definitely! Hope you enjoy it :)

Girl, Woman, Other is excellent. Run don’t walk to read it!
