The way I belly roll laughed at these reviews. Incredible. I love it when people are brutally honest about what they don't like. This was such a treat.
As always, I want to be your kitties. They always look HIGH AS A KITE from love and coziness.
That mini crockpot is ADORABLE. I work from home but if I didn't, I would def make that purchase.
Two things that have changed my life are an electric tea kettle that has controlled water temps digitized for convenience. I use it to make matcha, herbal tea, and French press coffee. It is LIFE changing. I'm literally giddy when I wake up in the morning. Shout out to my sister for gifting it to me for my bday. The other is a Loftie alarm clock. I can't/won't shut up about it. It's also a sound machine. It has this setting called a "Bed Signal" that plays a gorgeous tune letting you know when it's time to wind down for bed. That is when we put our phones across the room and pick up a book/Kindle. I stopped using my phone as an alarm clock and my attention span, creativity, and mind bandwidth has changed significantly. I'm going to write about it in more detail for my next Caught In My Web newsletter. Cannot recommend it enough!!
I told my husband yesterday that I just constantly look at pictures of them as kittens and I don't know how I am ever gonna function if I have a real human child
Ok I LOVE our work electric tea kettle but I don't have space just yet - french press coffee, GENUIS. I am googling this alarm clock now....
Your commentary on their comments is the best part of this! "Sheri seems fun" 🤭🤭🤭 You inspire me to look up one-star reviews of my favorite books now...
This was fun to read! I haven't looked up one star reviews of my favs but I love how creative people are with their takedowns. Thanks for shouting out my little reading project:)
lmao can't say i DISAGREE with the 'We Have Always Lived in the Castle' review...😉 I'm kidding if I was still a star user I'd give it 2 so xox I think its always good to stay humble by reading negative reviews of the books you love bc it makes sure you're not trapped in your own perspective !
I keep thinking I should start a newsletter about the books I read but then remember that I am such a middle aged white dude and my opinions are literally the last thing the world needs and besides, your newsletter is always so entertaining and informative that my decision to sit on my hands is 100% justified! And as proof, the last book I read was Set Phasers on Stun by Steven Casey which is not about Star Trek but is a terrific look at "how technological failures result from the incompatibilities between the way things are designed and the way people actually perceive, think, and act."
PS Thanks for the reminder that I finally need to read The Fifth Season.
Neil we still need you!!! we just need everyone else as well. If you have things to say, say them and you will find your people. I think that book sounds fascinating.
Goodreads mean is a different level! Imagining the day that my writing is powerful enough to take away someone's will to live...especially as powerful of a will as Rebecca's
So funny. I had to look some of mine up after reading this and they were too funny not to share. Hope you don't mind that I shamelessly copied your post, with my own examples. Maybe you re-started the IG challenge here on Substack? The last random purchase that changed my life must be these Fast Brain Friend planners that caught my eye in the middle of the night on Instagram. There are a few different templates so no day is ever the same and I have to say while I don't really think I have ADHD (supposedly what they are designed for) they are really working for me... not something I can say about anything else I've randomly bought while scrolling drunk or suffering from insomnia.
I’ve told you before I subscribe to the BookBub email list. When a cheap Kindle book catches my eye, I go STRAIGHT to the one and two star reviews. If these reviewers seem ignorant or silly, I’ll read the three to five star reviews to decide on the purchase. If the low-star reviewers are my kind of people (smart, snarky, realists), I usually stop there and move on.
My last great rando purchases were a new, easier to handle and clean cap for my Takeya water bottle and a skull cap you can heat up or chill to put on your head when you have a migraine: Migraine Headache Relief Cap,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DLVXZCYD?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I also bought fire- and waterproof pouches for photos and important documents for my “go-bag” as well as a portable litter box for the kitties go-bag. The Cali fires really freaked me out and motivated me to get my act together.
thats a perfect way to use Goodreads reviews, i think.
I just won a migraine relief cap in a white elephant exchange over the holidays and it is also life changing!!!
I bought a resistent document thing for us and wanted to try and document everything we own but it feels so daunting to get all this together! Its important though, its always good to be (sanely) prepared
That’s such a useful gift to win in a white elephant!
Disaster prep is A LOT. But the anxiety of not being prepared was making me lose sleep. It’s helpful to start with lists - everything you’d need to get yourselves and the kitties through a week away from home. My husband even got me to put a mini-go bag in my car because it is not unusual here to get trapped on a highway during a snowstorm and have to sleep in your car 🥶.
Also, we are taking video inventories of each room in our house and the garage and shed too, in case we ever need to file an insurance claim. Two to three minute videos of each room naming the main items and the approximate year of purchase and cost.
I went down a Reddit thread on how to document your belongings and it was way more complicated than the video idea, I think I’ll start with that , so much more manageable!
If I do read negative reviews of books I like, it's usually because I can have an imaginary fight with the people in my head and I can tell them all the ways their wrong. Ditto goes for seeing really high reviews of books I despised. Gotta let these imaginary people know what's UP!
Most recent random thing I bought recently: one of those toothpaste tube squeezer things. A very technical term.

The haters have NO SHAME! 😂

It’s a little pricey for an alarm clock but worth every penny!!
I’ve been eyeing the Hatch alarm clock and keep telling myself I don’t need it!
I hear Hatch is annoying and it doesn’t always shut off when you press it 😬 you probs don’t need it. You DO need a Loftie tho…☺️😂
GLAD I brought this matter to the group!!! Going to check out loftie!
Ooooh, added the Loftie to my gift ideas list. I added Natalie’s coffee warmer too. Thanks gals!
Your commentary on their comments is the best part of this! "Sheri seems fun" 🤭🤭🤭 You inspire me to look up one-star reviews of my favorite books now...
be careful that you are feeling emotionally strong when you do... 😂
“i prefer childbirth” SAVAGE!!!!!!!!
also thank you so much for the shoutout! i am forever honored
sometimes when people repost my stuff i want to shout WE ARE NOT WORTHY but really we all are.
This was fun to read! I haven't looked up one star reviews of my favs but I love how creative people are with their takedowns. Thanks for shouting out my little reading project:)
People are certainly creative and… blunt lol
Haha that’s true too
This made me cackle. I am also delighted to know so many of my favorite books are so vehemently despised! We love a visceral reaction.
I love a succinct one too! they really get straight to the heart of it
lmao can't say i DISAGREE with the 'We Have Always Lived in the Castle' review...😉 I'm kidding if I was still a star user I'd give it 2 so xox I think its always good to stay humble by reading negative reviews of the books you love bc it makes sure you're not trapped in your own perspective !

Copy away!! There are so many good ideas I copy all the time, it’s fun.
Most of my scrolling drunk purchases have not turned out as useful so that’s saying something!
Such a fun post!! I’m here for all the cynics 😆🤣.

I love looking at these! They make me laugh out loud
goal achieved then!!
The Secret History review took me out!!! People really love that one though…
that review was too good I almost wonder if they just did it to be funny lol
Always in need of more comedy!
Okay, I love all your posts but this was just incredible. The reviews of The Secret History and Jonathan Strange had me DYING.
These reviews are as honest and brutal as a toddler telling you what they think 😂

I love having those invisible fights in my head with wrong people
Toothpaste tooth squeezer is absolutely something I would buy I’m honestly shocked I don’t have one yet
Very useful, highly functional, 10/10.
I laughed aloud over these very short pans!
at least the pans are funny right!
Funny, yes. And I might also agree with them
oh no not my favorite books!
they really did it to us
