I love finding other fans of Station Eleven! It feels like it’s so underrated. And you mention Severance in your TBR, which I also read closely after SE, and can concur it’s of a much similar vibe & I throughly enjoyed it. By chance did you watch the HBO show of SE? I was surprised both how different and also how much I loved it!

We did try to watch the show Severance but found it deeply unsettling and just kind of stopped watching, not out of dislike but maybe it was too serious at the moment. I love the concept though. I didn’t know they were related !

"I spent Memorial Monday afternoon living the trials and tribulations of polite 1870s New York society with a cat on my lap, writing down observations and quotes in a little moleskin." YES PLEASE. The kitties are everything!!!!

Most excited to read Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors. It should arrive next week.

The Ministry Of Time sounds BONKERS in the best possible way!!! Most of my TBR pile is from you and this newsletter and I love that. I took a very long break from contemporary lit (I'm a classics girl-besides horror) and felt completely overwhelmed and lost, until you! Thank you Thank you. 🥹❤️

well that is the greatest compliment I could ever receive!!! I need to read Cleo and Frank to see what all the hype is. I have a love hate with contemporary so I hope I steer my dear readers in the right direction.

I also love apocalypse books, though I had never thought much about why -- I love the term "disillusionment charm." It is very apt.

I recently read The Wolves of Winter by Tyrell Johnson, which was a really quite good apocalypse book. If you're ever in the mood for a very silly alien apocalypse book, I highly recommend Stephanie Meyer's The Host. It's an all time favorite of mine, and has a soothingly ridiculous vision of survivalist homesteading. There's also a wonderfully plotless movie adaptation with Saoirse Ronan!

severence was so brilliant and bleak and entertaining I’d highly recommend!! I didn’t love station eleven when I first read it but I think perhaps I just wasn’t in the right mindset so I’ll have to do a re read

That definitely happens to all of us, also it may just not be everyone’s cup of tea and that’s ok. So much of what we read is about timing right. Looking forward to severance!!

I’m reading Birnam Wood by Elizabeth Catton. I’m enjoying it more than I thought it would. The book that think was amazing and had stayed with me is The Marriage Portrait by Maggie OFarrell.

“As I said in my review, this book makes me weepy and dream of buying a bookstore dedicated to books like Station Eleven.”

Yes. This. Now I’m thinking about my own magical bookshop with books of a certain ilk. What fun!

Came here too to quote this line - I love it. It’s one of those lines that helps coalesce your own feelings into something properly defined. I too now want a bookshop.

Book of the century for me is A Gentleman in Moscow.

Enjoyed the piece Natalie, subscribing 🙂

I have Sea of Tranquility on my Kindle, but am I to understand that I should read Station Eleven first? Are they part of a series or arc?

If an Ulta employee stopped me to point out my shiners (which I acknowledge I have, but don’t always care to make the effort to cover), I’d have told them to back the fuck away. Seriously - they must be trained not to arbitrarily approach customers by pointing out supposed “flaws” to be fixed? No?
