Wow! Great reading month for you. That couch is a whole situation!! I have been thinking of moving into my spare room where I write and (supposedly) practice yoga to try to get a handle on my sleep issues. But if I had a couch like that I could just sleep in the living room…
The only one I’ve read is Stoner, and your description of it was spot on. When I was done, I tried asking myself if I enjoyed it, and decided the word that best described how I felt was satisfied.
I loved Crime & Punishment, precisely because reading it was a slog and FELT like a punishment, which was so meta and I found that very oddly satisfying as well.
I need a better sense of this couch, please. I’m having couch envy.
WOW WOW WOW, you really blessed us in this issue. Girthy AF.
Congrats on the new couch!!! In my next life, I would like to come back as one of your kitties. They always look so happy, relaxed, and spoiled 😍
I so glad you loved YOU LIKE IT DARKER. I felt the same way, classic King. Danny Coughlin’s Bad Dream was also a fav. Loved the alien one too. Really want to read Woodworm.
The Great British Baking Show brought us so much joy and I’m so sad it’s over. Dylan does indeed look like if he were a cat turned into a human 😂
Also…the amount of reading beans you have is impressive/goals.
The best purchase I’ve made this year are Canopy humidifiers for my home office and bedroom. They come with little aromatherapy discs to put on top and make both rooms smell so nice/give me supple skin.
Currently reading: As You Wish. Inconceivable Tales From The Making of Princess Bride and Middlemarch by George Eliot.
I’m loving Middlemarch. I just started so it’s too early to tell about the story itself BUT the sentences are SO FUN TO READ. They are so meaty and rhythmic. A delight for the brain. I think you’d love it. I get the hype. Here for it. Glad I’m finally reading it.
Enjoyed this. Probably enjoyed You Like it Darker a bit less than you -- on the whole I think I preferred the previous short story collection, although it has its moments. Really liked the final story, The Answer Man.
For me, the novella collection Different Seasons (adapted into Stand By Me, Shawshank, etc.) and the short story collection Skeleton Crew. and The Shining.
Enjoyed the recent Fairy Tale; I know a lot of fans did not but I find a lot to like in it.
Carrie is my all-time favorite, followed by The Shining and The Stand. I actually liked Fairy Tale, but it was because of the audiobook - the narrator really made the experience! I haven't read Shawshank or a lot of his more recent - its just too hard to keep up with!!
love to hear that that you loved woodworm + jawbone!!! both such wonderfully horrifying reads, as is the haunting of hill house so glad to hear it found you when you needed it :’) I have always maintained it’s one of those you just have to read at the right time in your life
Yasss for Woodworm and Lolly Willowes. I was surprised by how exhilarating Woodworm felt, and I'm always impressed by authors who can conjure up a completely new fantasy environment in such a short space. And Lolly Willowes was fine! I was more glad that I finally read it. Was looking for more Devil, though.
It’s hard sometimes reading those ‘older’ books where the social expectations were so different, where something that seems very normal to us now was super radical then. I have to remind myself that it’s a perspective shift and try to read it through that lens. It’s not always fun though, I’m reading a 1920s Colette right now and it is a SLOG.
You are a reader! The book I read from that list is Beloved. I had just headed back to college after years in the work force, and I fell deeply into this book. What an experience--I wouldn't have missed it for the world.
props for getting through Jawbone with a teen girl aversion, that sounds like a nightmare for you hehehe. i love an excruciating read, so it was right up my alley.
and so pleased the Hill House re-read was kind to you! it took me a while to kinda get what the deal was with that one, but as soon as i let go of expectations and let the ambiance of the prose carry me through it became really enjoyable.
I really didnt know I had the aversion until reading this but girls and their bodies are kinda gross, no? it has truly stuck with me though, I think i may like it more the further away i get from the reading experience
it does take a while to get what the deal is you are right! letting go of expectations with the classics seems to be the best method
Let’s go Crime & Punishment !!! i also feel an inadequacy to properly ‘understand’ is so right here w you! I’m just gonna treat it like…. A normal book 🤪 we can do this 🫶

You could absolutely sleep on this thing and it’s modular so when you get tired of that you can put it back in any shape you want!

You HAVE to read Woodworm. I know you will love it.
I have heard some GBBO watchers are rewatching this season because they love it so much 😂
the beans are taking over if you don't hear from me again i am buried in them
YOU ARE READING MIDDLEMARCH!! what do you think so far??? That might need to be my goal classic for 2025

King's sheer productivity remains impressive.
if nothing else he is prolific!
Intimidatingly prolific.
Do you have a favorite Stephen King book?
For me, the novella collection Different Seasons (adapted into Stand By Me, Shawshank, etc.) and the short story collection Skeleton Crew. and The Shining.

agreed!!! like most everything worth our time, I imagine

I was definitely looking for more devil - i think it was lost on me just how rebellious that book probably was for the time period.
and that's a great way to put it about woodworm, she conjured something so intense in so few words, remarkable!

To be fair a lot of these were very short ☺️ beloved is an experience you are so right!!

YES PIRATE DYLAN 😂
Woodworm was my favorite read of fall too! That one and Wolf on the table.
