NATALIE! Curses. You’ve done it again - heaped another one onto my TBR pile. Curses, I say!
I thought it was hilarious that you said it took you a week to read. I guess that’s a long time for you? Even in the “before times” (pre-🦠), I read slowly. Now, it’s downright glacial. Which only adds to my outrage at your adding to my pile, but I can’t be mad. You’re doing your thing ☺️
Thank you for the review—I’ve gone back and forth like you but will get this book and take it with me to read during a week in the Southern Smokies, where I grew up. Do you think the woman who called it poverty porn has ever lived in poverty? I bet not.
I am writing in a candidate for the what should you review next-ish question: Colton Whitehead’s Crook Manifesto. He has been criticized by one least one reviewer for writing another book about a character in Harlem in the 60s/70s, suggesting that Whitehead is not enough of a real bad-ass (the reviewer thinks he is) to write crime novels.
I bet not is right! Is she arguing that just because the characters experience poverty, their stories aren't worth telling? I don't subscribe to that. And I have been meaning to read a Whitehead for SO long. This is a great write in candidate :)
A review that completely does the book justice. I’m so glad you finally read it and loved it!!! We will never know Barbara’s white woman writer magic that was able to create such a loveable mixed raved redhead (such a great line from you can I JUST say✨) also pls review Birnam Wood next! I just preordered the paperback to arrive on my door step in March (such a hideous wait but I am quite anti hardback if I can help it) and I want to know what you thought of it! Would equally appreciate an In Memoriam review as would also like to read that one day.
Ps I also still do wordle everyday and send every attempt to exchanges with my Dad. Our results are never consistent
ah that makes me so happy that Wordle is bringing us closer to our parents 😭. so cute. and thank you I'm so glad the review did the book justice because this was a really hard one, mostly trying to create at Kingsolver standards! I honestly want to read all those books in the poll so I'm going to get ON IT. I have a Kindle version of Birnam Wood because like you I really have zero money or space for handbacks either (lets start a petition to publish new books in paperback!!)

Whitehead is 🔥. I second this. Haven’t read Crook Manifesto yet but I highly recommend Underground Railroad, the Nickel Boys, and Sag Harbor.

apropos of both Subverse AND this issue, when I started reading Louise Penny I dreamt in Louise Penny ;)
At least its a soothing voice to have in your head at night - I LOVE that. 😃
