My husband and I just watched Triangle of Sadness and were absolutely riveted. It's so well done and that ending-- wooo! If anyone has seen it and has similar recs, send them my way!

There's so much I usually can't handle but it walked that fine line & I ended up loving it!

This is SUCH an interesting piece! I would say I've definitely experienced genuine fear while reading, but I haven't experienced prolonged, active fear while reading something long, in the same way that I can be actively terrified through 85% of a horror movie. More like blips of the sensation of terror and longer stretches of dread, intrigue, etc. And scenes or thoughts that linger. Scariest thing I remember reading is a short story (probably key!) by Ray Bradbury: "The Whole Town's Sleeping." (It's part of Dandelion Wine but I first read it in an Alfred Hitchcock anthology.) It just hits me in my most scary spots.

Dandelion Wine has been on my radar for quite a while, now I HAVE to check it out.

I bought it recently to re-read and haven't gotten around to it! (But obviously I paid a little extra for the coolest retro cover option.)

“I’m generally not a fan of quick stories.”

We are sisters from another mister, I swear it. I find short stories so unsatisfying for the same reasons. If the story is good, I always want more. I guess maybe short story writers consider that a measure of success, but not if I never buy your book to begin with.

I can’t say what the scariest book I’ve ever read has been, but it was probably non-fiction. Nothing can match real life. I’d probably put The Stand down for the same reason you did.

Did you ever read 11/22/63 by King? I loved that one.

And yet here I am complaining about 1,000 page tomes also being a source of anxiety! I haven’t read 11/26/63 simply for that reason, even tho I’ve heard nothing but good things!

You read Demon Copperhead! You can do it!! 11/22/63 isn’t scary. It’s just great storytelling.

It has been calling my name recently, but so has The Wanderers by Chuck Wendig which is also another end of the world epidemic massive story. I'm paralyzed trying to choose! :)

Scariest was Pet Cemetery by Stephen King

I read it so young that strangely I don't remember it very well - I need to reread! I just hate the idea of dead pets

We had a toddler at the time, and I think that's what was really scary to us.

That Gilmore girls video made me giggle, what incredible editing !!! Agree with your point though, books are so hard to be scary! Uncomfortable and gross and unnerving yes but scary is quite hard. I just read ‘Ring Shout’ which was definitely the most uncomfortable read I’ve read in a while but scary no? Been intending to read ‘We have always lived in the castle’ for a while !! Will have to get now 🍄
