An utterly nonbookish comment: that is THE perfect rollerskating outfit.

Love without question: Roberto Bolano and Carlson Whitehead. Glad to see Whitehead’s The Intuisionist make the Atlantic’s list. James Salter, too.

The Bolano I bought stares at me from the shelf every time I skip over it for something else... SOON!

I too love dream-like, speculative dystopias that’s why I love Emily St. John Mandel and David Mitchell.

I love Haruki Murakami books without any question. I have undergone a serious existential crisis while ready Kafka on the shore.

I have never gone roller skating.

Currently I'm reading Conversations with friends by Sally Rooney and A room of one's own by Virginia Woolf. I am loving both. A room of one's own is my first attempt at reading classics. Definitely the writing style is complex for me whose first language isn't English. But I'm new to books, so actually I'm living being a reader.💌

Thanks for the great recs.

I haven't read that Murakami yet but I want to! Reading him is absolutely an existential event.

I room of one's own isnt exactly fun but such an important read. Thats so impressive reading in a second language. Glad to have you here as a reader! :)

Welp, now I have to add that to my TBR, too. Guess I'll just have to live forever! I wanted to take up roller skating during the pandemic but was talked out of it and regret it to this day. I know there's still time etc, etc, but it has been literal decades since I've been roller skating.

I am currently reading Ashes and Stones by Allyson Shaw (subtitle: A Journey Through Scotland in Search of Women Hunted as Witches) It's good so far! I'm about 50 pages in. I'm interested in the subject matter, anyways, so I probably would say it was good either way.

My mom tried to talk me out of it so I understand that!!

That sounds extremely interesting. Love any witch mythology or history.

It's definitely interesting and I'm learning a lot, but it's less memoir and more history book. That could be on me for misinterpreting the marketing language, but there's no real through line or reason 'why' all of these sites are being visited. I'd still recommend though, for nothing else other than the history, Scottish heritage and highlands, and witchiness.

"I was flying around that thing like an Abba member out of the disco." I fucking love you. You two are adorable and that sounds like so much fun. The last time I went rollerskating was maybe 10 years ago? I found my rollerblades from when I was 18 in great condition after going through all of my high school things in my sister's basement. I've been thinking about putting some oil on the wheels and giving them a whirl. I prefer rollerskating to rollerblading.

My inbox on the Substack app has been so weird lately. This newsletter isn't showing up at all in my inbox on the app for me. I get notifications in my email as well for this very reason, otherwise I would have had no idea you published a new one!

Adding the Ferryman to my TBR. There are so many now because of you!!! Thank you and also ugh. 😭

ok all of Substack has been weird for me. My husband just completely stopped getting my newsletter in his emails altogether (not even in spam!) and we really don't know why. This makes me nervous its happening to a lot of people... Well thank you for seeking me out regardless!!

And I can't recommend busting out the skates enough - just get some wrist and elbow guards lol. Its so freeing to be on wheels especially if there is music involved.

UGH is right my TBR is never ending - thats the business I am in I guess!!

Make Substack open a ticket to resolve the issue! There is that little chat box in the desktop version (if it’s still there they always change things up so much) I had an issue and they fixed it.

I loooooved the skating rink when I was a wee lass. You’re right, I should make a return. 🛼🛼

I definitely did let Substack know because my own publication isn't even showing up in my own inbox online or on the app! distressing but thank you SO much for warning me!! :)

A top 10 of the year book already in March is impressive Natalie! I’m glad it found you. So aghast at this Atlantic list I keep revisiting it. And gasping. I love the rollerskating pics!!!! Long live the fun. This is also the first I’ve ever heard of RuPaul starting a book shop. Respectfully wtf is going on in book world today???!?!!???!!?
