What an amazing shoutout, Natalie. Thank you!! I'm so glad you're in for the read-a-long -- and that cover you found is absolutely stunninggggggg. If you're interested in Pulitzer Prize winner drama and unexpected wins, you'll love reading about the circumstances under which Wharton won hers for Age of Innocence...

I'll definitely be reading about your East of Eden buddy read. That was the first novel I read after I finished my PhD and it still burns in my brain constantly. The prose! The settings! The whole KATE THING. Yeah. Amazing novel.

Just subscribed! I've always been madly in love with Scorsese's The Age of Innocence and watch it every year. I've always wanted to read the book but never got around to it. Now is the time.

Yes!! The movie is phenomenal. It's one of those movies that, when I read the novel, I'm STUNNED by the fidelity to the original text. And the departures it makes from the main narrative are so earned. I hope you'll have a lovely experience getting into the novel, and I hope you'll come to be as madly in love with Wharton's version as Scorsese's!

I love this so much! I'm doing my first buddy read ever of Moby Dick with my friend, and we're writing about it starting next week. It's taken a bucket list book and made it much more accomplishable for me. Such a fun idea!

Hi from another member of The Age of Innocence read-a-long community. I am absolutely loving it so far. Hayley's notes are SO HELPFUL!!!

Also, I almost invited myself to your East of Eden buddy read after Martha mentioned it last week. I am trying to pace myself so holding off for now but I have my copy lined up for June since I will be traveling and want big, thick books for my cross-atlantic flights!

The great thing is that even if we don't read East of Eden at exactly the same time, that discussion thread will live forever and I certainly would love to discuss at any time!

Haley is a special star! What a great experience to read along with her

If one of the cats starts discussing Jane Eyre plot lines with you, maybe put the book down and go for a walk. Or drink some water.

Thanks so much for sharing my post, Natalie! 🤎

I've always been too nervous to join a buddy read, mostly because I'm scared I'll say something dumb too -- but you've made me reconsider and feel a little more confident. I won't be able to join the buddy read of East of Eden, but I'll definitely be less nervous to try one in the future 😊

I was shocked by how much I enjoyed the experience!

Well I guess I have to go read The Age of Innocence now...

Also, have you tried the buddy read feature on The Storygraph? I have not and so cannot recommend it but I know it exists and that people tend to enjoy it. A penny in your cap (thoughts? feather? whatever the saying is) for your future buddy read needs.

no i havent! i forget about storygraph which is a shame because it is better than goodreads in a lot of ways. I will keep that in mind.

and hooray for us all reading age of innocence together!!

I particularly like it because graphs!!! But yeah, it really is such an improvement. Also a non- Amazon, POC woman owned tool is a win in my book. The quarter star ratings alone and content warnings make it so worth it.

I own the Age of Innocence and haven’t read it yet, and since the schedule is so manageable I *guess* I’ll have to participate!!

I know I'm late to the party but I just got Cleopatra and Frankenstein and I'm so excited to read it for my breath of fresh air/summer is coming read. I've always brushed past it then I read an interview with Coco Mellors and it made me want to read the book. She seems wonderful and I love that it got rejected 30 times and she was like AH AH, I'm not giving up!! Relentlessness going after a dream always steals my heart.

The Night Of...ugh. Infuriating. Heart breaking. Just thinking about it makes me angry, My condolences. 😬

Kitty heaven is where I want to be right meow. They make me so happy, thank you for sharing them with us.

Im late to the Cleo and Frank party too!! Its on the summer list for sure. I follow her on instagram and she is so real seeming, which is refreshing. The night of was a traumatic experience I told Mark we couldnt watch right before bed, but so worth the watch. I am always in kitty heaven :)

The more the merrier for the East of Eden buddy read! The end of May can’t come soon enough - I can’t wait to read with you Natalie!! I feel like I need to prep my brain because people won’t stop talking about how much of an impact East of Eden made on them when they read it. My expectations are high.

"Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell" was one of the most profound reading experiences I've ever had. Hope you enjoy it till the end! And I also recommend the TV adaptation, which is oddly satisfying.
