Have you read The Fog by James Herbert? I know Stephen King was a big fan of it (and Herbert’s first book, The Rats, which is utterly terrifying) and it sits in the same family of epidemic type novels, with the fog being the mechanism of transmission. Maybe one of the first in the genre?
Oh and I just thought, you might also like Last One At The Party by Bethany Clift. It took over a year before I stopped thinking about it every day! So good. I hope you enjoy them if you read them!
And then last year, I devoured (sorry) Black River Orchard. What a story! It's pretty much the perfect read for fall: small town, murderous apples, lots and lots of interpersonal drama. Loved it so much! (Apologies if you've read it and written about it already; I'm a new subscriber. Really enjoying your book picks!) —Mel
In my research I heard Wendig was very politically vocal so I may need to start following him! I just got Black River Orchard on a kindle deal and I heard it was a wild ride, sounds like I will need to add it to a fall TBR. and you can always mention books even if I have read them I will just tell you to shush (just kidding!) - so glad you are here :)
It is a very wild ride, and I loved it. There's some serious gross-out scenes, but they're also well done, so I didn't mind. Like Stephen King, he's so good at making you care about the characters in these over-the-top situations. It did make me pause before biting into an apple a few times ;-)

I haven't read Wanderers yet, but I'm a big fan of Chuck Wendig, as a human and as a writer. His blog posts are pretty epic. Way back, I read his novel Invasive, a thriller about weaponized ants in Hawaii. It's Jurassic Park-adjacent and VERY entertaining.
