I'll be ignoring any and all Anne Rice slander. She gave us the brat prince Lestat, she can do no wrong in my heart and mind.

Teen Witch is so fucking bad it's good. The Top That rap might be the worst thing ever recorded on film. I remember watching it as a child thinking, this is so terrible I cannot look away. 😂

The Sixth Sense makes me miss Bruce Willis in film. Spot on with Haley Joel Osment's little face. Ugh.

I am loving your SPOOKY SEASON posts this month. Thank you for blessing us!

Right now I am re-reading Octavio Paz's book of essays, The Labyrinth Of Solitude about Mexico's culture, character, and people. ❤️‍🔥

THE RAP hahaha Im so glad you know that movie it kills me lol

Anne Rice is queen even if she's aged a bit.

That essay collection sounds fierce! Have you read Creep? Did we talk about that already?

Natalie you got such a gift with your niche I trust you completely as the spooky culture correspondent in my feed. One of my friends LOVED interview with a vampire’s tv adaptation but otherwise Anne Rice is a blind spot in my shelves. I will contribute only little, and it’s that my parents love “the witches of eastwick” movie for when you’re done with the book. I mean it’s Jack Nicholson and Cher so a cult classic

spooky correspondent i am putting that in my bio stat lol

I have been avoiding the witches of eastwick movie until i read it, i forgot CHER was in it so damn i really need to get on that so i can watch the movie hell yes.

Nat you put a lil extra sauce in this one, it read beautifully!

Loved the Anne Rice rundown in particular — I’ve never read her. I feel like as a horror lover who grew up reading Twilight I should at least read Interview with a Vampire…

I could have sworn I replied to your comment! I got SO saucy when writing this right before I was heading out the door to vacation 😂 you really should it’s like reading a true origin story

thanks for the shoutout! Anne Rice was my introduction to vampires way before Twilight. We had Interview with the Vampire on VHS for some reason so I watched it when I was maybe 10? Liked it but didn't quite understand it (i was 10, so duh) so I didn't watch it again for years. Now it's one of my faves. I didn't know she wrote the book to deal with her daughter! That recontextualizes the whole story for me. Lestat is the only time ive ever been attracted to Tom Cruise.

VHS STOP hahahah Tom Cruise is a creepazoid but he's phenomenal in that movie, adult child vampire or not

Expand full comment

I always joke that Tom Cruise actually is a gay vampire and that’s why he did such a good job, he’s just getting to be himself.

hey mary, I’d love to hear your thoughts on my latest post about vampires - Ann Rice’s characters feature heavily, the sexy monsters

Okay this essay is FANTASTIC. I love your wit and your amazing insights. I, too, sob my face off every time I watch The Sixth Sense because oh my god, it's SO SAD.

I blame you for the fact that I'll be rapping "Top That" for the entire weekend. I LOVE Teen Witch. That outfit she wears to the dance is so good. It's burned in my brain. And her denim jacket!!!!! And that damn amulet!!!!!

Have you read that fantastic history book about the witch trials by Stacy Schiff? I read most of it a few autumns ago, and this post is reminding me to pluck it off my October shelf again and give it some couch time.

Another great installment, my friend. I’ve come to accept that I can enjoy your posts without feeling terrible about all the things I’m not reading that you make sounds AMAZEBALLS…<sigh>…

Have you been to Salem? Took my oldest niece there for her 30th bday. It was my second time. We almost bailed and fled to Boston after the first night - we took a very boring walking tour that we peeled away from partway through. But the next day we went to some of the kitschiest, witchiest museums and they were all so awesome in a tacky way. We actually did learn a lot too. We even got matching tattoos that night to commemorate something we learned! (Look up Giles Corey and “more weight” - those are the words we got: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giles_Corey)

I hope it’s more like a repository of things to get to when the mood strikes!!

I have but I would LOVE to go. Matching tats is quite rebellious of you 👻

love this essay about vampires in media! I'm working on a similar thing, but imo the sexy/brooding vampire goes back to Bram Stoker and the Romantic era. for me at least, the allure is timeless 🤩

I have a rec for you (if you can manage to stream it in the US!) I watched a documentary on channel 4 called: ‘Suranne Jones: Investigating Witch Trials’ earlier this summer and I learnt SO MUCH about the hysteria surrounding witches & how it came to be & the fact it’s just re packaged misogyny. 2 parts, I thought it was v v good and since I have wanted to read a more historical book on witches!

I feel like there isn’t a woman who didn’t have a vampire phase bc of twilight! I love to rewatch those films even to this day, when I’m feeling blue. I made Patrick watch them all for the first time last year and he said, I quote, ‘they’re not that bad’. It gets a bad rap. I’m not sure I could ever reread the books today, I don’t want to ruin the way I think about them! (I read them when I was 10, definitely way too young)

TEN!!! I read them after college that makes me feel so old hahaha if you read Twilight now you would hate it so best left to our imaginations. I need to check out that documentary that sounds perfect for spooky season. you are right its just another way to control women (surprise!)

I have a theory that you could write an academic paper on the different eyeshadows in The Love Witch.

I'm literally finishing Lolly Willowes tonight, and then will be moving onto Ghosts by Edith Wharton. I don't like being scared so idk why I'm doing this to myself.

I didn't have a vampire phase as a teen (because I did, and still do, resent Twilight) but apparently I'm going through one now so I'm reading all the smutty vampire books I can get my hand on.
